Walking

By Groovybabe • Sep 4th, 2007 • Category: exercise, life

My son started senior (high) school today. This means I am going to get really fit really soon. You see I have vowed to walk him to school every day and pick him up every day. That means TWO HOURS of walking per day! (an hour there and back each morning and afternoon) It will do him the world of good too, all the walking. He used to get lifts to school from my mother but in my quest to take full responsibility for my life, this is now my job and I don’t drive. But I get to improve my health and lose weight. Win win!

I have a snack attack tip! If you want to eat something but don’t want to use up your calories on it, get sugar free ice pops/poles… no calories but they feel like a treat. I guess they’re not the most ideal snack coming up to winter (if you are) but I’m addicted to them!

Lady T and Rachel B, I have wanted to comment on your journals specifically but this connection really sucks sour eggs (I should get broadband any day). So I will just say I am thinking of you and your struggles urge success to come your way! You can do it, just stick at the struggle, if you want to call it that, on a day by day basis and you will get there.

Getting back to my son,  I am really proud of his change in attitude since I have been on this weightloss misson, which I acknowledge is probably down to my change in attitude. Before, he never wanted to walk anywhere or do outside activity; he would moan if I made him walk ten minutes to the shop. He wouldn’t touch anything remotely healthy or adventurous (not sure where this comes from as I always did, even when not weightwatching) but over the last three months he has transformed before my eyes. He walks places without moaning. We often walk to the shops since we’ve moved, which is a 45 minute round trip. Today he did not flinch at having to walk home from school, a 30 minute walk after 6 hours at school. I even suggested today that we start to go swimming once per week and he was up for it. Complete 1-80. He has also lost weight in this time too and it is really noticable. That could be down to the dentist telling him he had to stop eating sweets and junk (and my mother stopping feeding him junk behind my back) but I think he has easily lost 10lbs without trying, and on a little 11-year-old body that is quite a lot. The moral of the story here, if there is one, surely has to be that by making positive changes in our lives to improve our own health we are also benefitting those around us who we love. Again, win win all around!

Groovybabe is 14.9 stones today and has lost 2lbs at her last weigh in.

  1. My sister, who is thirteen, won’t walk a block without complaining and yelling at my mom. Good for your son. And good for the mom who is effectively setting a powerful example.
By the way, thanks for the kind words. I am feeling good about my recommittal. In fact, I am about to leave on an hour and a half bike ride with the family.
    Happy week to you~

  2. That’s a lot of walking!

And you’re right in getting J to do it too, since what he learns now will be his habits for a long long time!

    Good on ya!

  3. i am happy to hear that about your son. LR lost weight just by eating with me. i would order healthy fare at resturaunts, then he would too…he told me just yesterday that all the walking he’s doing now, seems to be melting it off him even more!

awww…thank you sweetie. i am trying to keep that in mind. one day at a time. i am actively back in the struggle….not allowing my diet to “just happen” but letting it be something i choose.

i’m also food journaling on my blog for the next few days….see if it sticks. i keep forgetting when i do it the ole fashion pen and paper way.

i get my internet tomorrow. so i should be up and running this weekend!

omg! i might have a saturday post! how odd is that??? lol.

  4. I think you have a great plan for walking! I’m waiting for the weather to cool down a little bit so I can start walking again. I feel so much better when I do.

  5. Wow! All of that walking is going to be great! I bet the pounds will just melt off you! Woo hoo!!!

I think it’s great that these changes are not only benefiting you… but are benefiting your children as well! That definitely is a WIN!!!
