More Protein?
I have been doing Fitday for a few days and have found there are good and bad in this system. I don’t like that when I input a new food it sometimes tells me the nutritional data entered (from the packet) is wrong and won’t let me add the food (this has led me to guessing what it whats from me thus entering wrong amounts). I also don’t like how finite and particular it has made me about calories and weighing; I really don’t think any good can come of being obsessed over what goes in my mouth. But it has allowed me to be accountable, knowing that what I eat will be seen by all. And I also like that it has made me address the percentages of food type I am eating.
I always knew I was eating a lot of carbs and I am fine with this because it does help to sustain me. My fat content is lower than I imagined. I think I am supposed to have about 30% but it’s more in the lower 20’s. I am not concerned about this in itself but coupled with my Xenical intake, which reduces the absorbption by 30% it does make me think, however not enough to eat more fatty foods or stop the Xenical.
My protein is lower than it should be and this is my area of immediate concern. I think I should be having about 30% protein on a low fat diet and my intake of that is lower. I think I eat quite a bit of protein rich foods like Salmon and ham etc but what else can I eat to up this? I really don’t want to include meat if I can help it. While you could not consider me a vegetarian any more given that I eat ham and the occassional sausages, I do still try to follow a veggie plan as much as possible as meat eating really doesn’t sit that well with me. I am thinking eggs (is the protein in the whites?), nuts and seeds I could incorporate, I guess.
OKAY - scrap that! Apparently my protein levels should be 15%!
In other news, my stomach is changing shape. Not so much that it is reducing, though it is, but the front, while it used to me completely round is now flat at the sides of my stomach with the middle part of my stomach more rounded. It’s hard to explain. You know when I slim woman works her abs, its like that shape (only bigger, given my size). This seems to have come about since I have been working my abs on the cage on the floor at the gym. I’ve been doing 4/12 normal situps and 4/12 with my legs at a 90 degree angle.
I have not been well at all today. I didn’t get to sleep until 5.30am as I have things on my mind and had to get up at 7am. I got Jordan a lift to school so that I could go back to bed. I lay down for 10 minutes unable to sleep and when I got back up again I couldn’t stand without feeling like the room was moving and I was going to faint. I figured it was down to a lack of sleep and managed to get 3 more hours but I woke up feeling worse. Nausea came too and I felt like if I eat I’ll be sick so I didn’t eat until about 1pm when I gave into the hunger. Luckily I haven’t been sick. But as is life on your own, I have to get dressed now and go to the supermarket and post office. I can’t wait for bedtime.

I know you solved the protein mystery, but here are my sources of protein anyway, in case you need them later:
eggs
lentils (or any legumes, so there is a lot of variety)
sourmilk/ natural yoghurt (dairy products)
some random soy bits (made to look like chunks of meat)–> soy products in general.
I have inadverdently (sp?) dropped eating meat, too! I just haven’t felt like it at all. Today I had some liver casserole for my protein intake, just because I got a huge craving for it (it’s something I eat only during christmas, usually). I’m going through a real obsessive lentil phase–I had never had lentils until this summer…

Mussels are a high source of protein with negligible fat. If you like them, you’re sorted! I love them!
Most of the nutrients (and fat and cholesterol and yumminess) in eggs is found in the yolk. Good source of protein is nuts! And beans! and tofu!
Dairy products are great for protein. And if you’re doing weights at the gym, 15% is NOT enough on such a low cal diet. aim for 30… it’s so hard to get that much, but it makes a huge diff. Yoghurt is good. Cottage cheese with pumpkin and sunflower seeds sprinkled on is a great brekkie.
What’s this “cage” you speak of?

Lady T
Thanks for your thoughts. I avoided eggs for a long time due to cholesterol but I do have an odd one now and again. Will try to have two per week.
Rosabel
I do have soya milk on my cereal so that should be good protein. I should buy tofu again, I haven’t had that for ages. And lentils, I should make a lentil soup or something! Thanks for the heads up.

Eww! I hate mussles!! Gross! LOL!
Yeah, I’m getting about 23% protein at the moment, I don’t think it would hurt to up that a bit.
This is one of those cage things,

Awww… I hope you’re feeling better today!

Ha ha ha.. okay I know what that is… when you were saying cage I was picturing a metal wire box type thing and wondering what on earth you would do with it! Funny that a lot of ab equipment came out for a while and all were touted as fad and useless, but that one is seen in gyms all over. i guess it does work!
I do my crunches on a swiss ball. A trainer showed me how when I was working out once and i like them because they’re hard but they don’t hurt my back. I do all my weights while sitting on the ball too.
Mussels are YUMMY! but they are seriously ugly so I understand why a lot of people won’t touch them. More for me - muhahahaha!
Yeah, more protein will help your muscles rebuild and help you recover more quickly.
