The Gym
By Groovybabe • Oct 22nd, 2007 • Category: gymI am back from the gym for the first time in 10 days. I am not fully recovered but thought it time I get back to it. I went with the view of just doing weights but once I’d done my warm up I was raring to go.
The warm up did see me get a stitch though, something that hasn’t happened before, but I just tried not to think about it. I just put it down to getting back into the swing of things.
Then I went on the XT. I didn’t have the energy to go mad for it so I settled at a nice range of about 8 and a half (sometimes 8, sometimes up to 9.5) for 25 minutes.
Then I got on the treadmill and my energy appeared from out of nowhere. Because I had the opportunity for jogging.
I wasn’t sure whether I would be able to jog today given that I haven’t exercised in almost 2 weeks. But I did better than I ever have. I did my five minute fit test at 5.0, then one minute at 5.0 then four minutes at 7.0 then 3 minutes at 5.0 then four minutes at 7.0 then 3 minutes walking. Or something. But it was the first time I’d done 4 straight minutes. I could have done 5 but didn’t want to push it. I am so happy that I am pretty much jogging the whole time. I am going to speak to my trainer about having a rest from the XT and concentrating on the jogging for a few weeks. My heart rate is higher when jogging anyway.
Things I like about my gym:
- Its fairly cheap.
- Its friendly.
- Its female only.
- I have good weightloss support.
Things I hate about my gym:
- Its too cheap (they wont fix a leak and charge you for water and shampoo!)
- There is no water fountain.
- It is female only.
I’ve been thinking about whether I’ll stay there when my contract is up and I am leaning towards not staying. I’m moving to London (probably) in August anyway so unless the chain is near where I move to (I don’t think it is) it’s not going to be worth it. Plus I don’t like that there is not free water. And a massive leak in the ceiling meant that a machine was out of use today. Its been leaking for months. I think I’d rather pay a higher subscription elsewhere next year and get a better place. It’s a shame though coz I have a good working relationship with my instructor. I must make an appointment to have my review as well.
Groovybabe is 14.11 stones today and feeling in control.

oooooooh, what’s prompting the move London-side? Going from where?
I miss London! I hope you find a great new gym there. I would think the gym would be concerned about mold with a leak for so long?
Just wondering why you simultaneously love and hate that your gym is female only?
Way to go on the fifty pounds. You impress me!
Zanitta - I emailed you about it!
Diana - I don’t think it’ll be a problem, London is heaving with gyms!!
Rachel - Well being female only I don’t have to feel insecure about my body around men but by the same token I don’t get to perve over men in a female only gym!!!
Thanks.
I remember you mentioning the water issue earlier, but then I didn’t have the time to read on it more. Do you mean that they don’t have like a water fountain there at all? I understand if they don’t hand out bottled water for free, but not providing the customers even with a fountain is kind of weird.
Here, we get free water… but it’s from the tap in the locker room. Here the whole bottled water thing isn’t really happening at all, mostly because the tap water here is so good and people just fill in their bottles at home and bring them to the gym. So unfortunately I don’t have anything really meaningful to say about whether gyms should provide water or not… But I do feel like all gyms as well as any public buildings should have water fountains if tap water is not very drinkable.
There is no water fountain but you can get - buy - bottled water from them across the desk (which I might add is double the price of the same bottle in the shops).
Water here is drinkable from the taps but in business environments they tend not to encourage you to drink water from the taps (not entirely sure why). I actually think in offices it is law that you have to have a water fountain. I’m not sure why that law doesnt extend to gyms though because if people are wary about drinking from taps (in the toilet/bathroom) then they could end up dehydrated.
