Working Out

By Groovybabe • Jan 28th, 2008 • Category: gym

I am exhausted! I went to the gym and worked out for 90 minutes plus I walked to the gym and back again (because I refused to pay public transport prices) which added another 45 minutes walking each way. Yay.

I ran and stuff. I also tried something different with the weight training. My old instructor told me to do lots of reps with low weights but I was chatting to a friend of mine who is an instructor herself and she reckons I’d be better off with less reps/higher weights. So I upped my weights to the next one up and lowered my reps from 4/20 to 3/12. This way I managed to complete the weight training, and really feel I am building strength. Yay.

I thought going back into the gym would be torture but it wasnt too bad. I think this is because I walked there, I already had a raised heart beat by the time I started. It wasnt until I got home that I became exhausted.

Groovybabe is 14.9 stones today and has lost 2lbs at her last weigh in.

and then WOW!!! 3 posts in TWO days!! YAY YAY YAY!!!

I think you are doing fabulous and I’m so inspired by your level of commitment and dedication. I’m glad you’ve reconnected with your old friend even if some of his ideas about women and weight are unrealistic, it does sound as though he is growing up and learning that not every woman looks good at 8 1/2 stone (119 pounds)

You’ve come so far and you’ve accomplished so much. I’m sure you are going to knock his socks off (and every other man in sight)

  2. Lots of reps with low wieghts = stamina training

Less reps with high weights = strength training

Ideally you want a happy balance between the two, known as atrophy! :o)

  3. Diana - thanks. I dont know if I have a high level of dedication but I am trying to pretend I have lol.

Heh, yeah. I guess we all like different types of people and he just likes small women. I really shouldnt look down on him for that (but will!). I am far more fattist than he ever could hope to me, ashamedly.

I have someone else for whom to look good too, so I have lots of incentive at the moment.

Jo - whats the difference between strength and stamina?

  4. Strenth is the amount you can lift whereas stamina is the amount of time you can lift for in very basic terms.

  5. ah ok…

would it be a good idea to do one week strength training and another week stamina training?

  6. I guess it depends what you are aiming for to be honest - personally I’d aim for a happy medium between the two.

You can also play with the speed you do the repetitions as well - slowing it down will make the exercise harder.

  7. cool thanks… how long should i rest between sets? no one has ever told me that!

  8. I would say about 30 seconds - but make the most of that time - don’t just sit/stand there, you want active recovery, so stetch out the muscles you were using, or have a drink, or do some deep breathing to get more o2 into your bidy. :o)

  9. Thanks! All this info is really helpful!

  10. No probs. Its nice to be able to use the knowlege from my course!!! :o)
